Presentations and quotations

I was honoured again to share my thoughts about the world sugar markets with readers of Südzucker's newsletter Sugar & Beyond published on 3rd December 2024. Is the global sugarmarket “stuck in a rut”? What effect do the cane fires in Brazil have on the global sugar market and what other influencing factors impact trade flows and prices?

As ExecutiveDirector of the ACP/LDC Sugarcane Industries Group, I was invited to speak to the World Association of Beet and Cane Growers on 25 November 2025 on the subject of “Will new challenges around the world bring new equilibrium to sugar markets?”. Please see my PowerPoint presentation here.

Honoured to share my thoughts about the cycles of the world sugar markets with readers of Südzucker's newsletter Sugar & Beyond published on 6th June 2024. And to everything there is a season, turn! turn! turn! as the old song by the American rock band The Byrds put it.

As a representative of ACP/LDC sugar producing countries, I gave a presentation to the European Commission's Sugar Market Observatory on developments in countries that have preferential access to the EU market. The EU  forms an important destination for sugar produced in ACP and LDC countries, and they are investing in quality and sustainability improvements to develop their sugar sectors. A Paucity of Bearish News in the International Sugar Markets Sugar stakeholders gathered together this year in person at conferences in Dubai (February 2023), Geneva (April) and in New York (May). The mood at all three gatherings was unremittingly bullish – whilst the bears … where are the bears? … are they still hibernating?See my article for Südzucker's "Sugar & Beyond" here.

“Touch and Go” for the World Market. What’s going on in the world sugar markets? How might the market resolve itself this year? And where might we expect sugar prices to go this summer? Key to this debate is the question of the global sugar balance sheet. See my article for Südzucker's "Sugar & Beyond" here.

About me

I am an international sugar trade analyst with more than thirty years of experience in sugar trading and broking gained at ED&F Man between 1987 and 2018 in a variety of roles.

My work has permitted me to travel widely and to learn first hand about the sugar industries in European, African, Caribbean, Asian and Pacific countries and to liaise with people at every level throughout the value chain, from ships’ crew, farmers, warehouse managers and clerical staff, to chief executives, high ranking officials and government ministers.

I was elected for eight years as President of the European Sugar Traders’ Association “ASSUC”, comprising sixty sugar trading companies in Europe.

Today, I participate in a number of committees representing sugar interests to governments and civil society and I research and write about the latest data and developments in the EU and UK sugar markets for my clients, for presentation in conferences and for publication in websites, newspapers and magazines.
