Anti-deforestation: Why the Commission is under pressure

From 2025, according to EU regulation, companies will have to prove that their products do not contribute to deforestation. However, some important foundations for implementation are still missing. "The Commission's work on the benchmarking is still incomplete," a spokesperson told Table.Briefings. It will take the necessary time to ensure that the assessment is "based on a scientifically and professionally sound methodology." As soon as the preliminary results are available, the Commission will enter into a dialog with the countries that have been classified (in whole or in part) as particularly high-risk.
