There is a surplus of sugar in Europe, which is pushing down the price of sugar and sugar beet and making sugar beet cultivation unprofitable , the Czech Sugar Growers' Association said in response to a question from ČTK. Minister of Agriculture Marek Výborný (KDU-ČSL) told journalists in Brussels on Monday that he had discussed the current situation on the sugar market with his Austrian colleague Norbert Totschnig and would like to find a solution. According to Výborný, the surplus and falling price of sugar have their consequences; according to his information, one of the two sugar factories owned by the Austrian company Agrana in the Czech Republic, the Moravian-Silesian Sugar Factory, should close in the Czech Republic. There are now seven sugar factories in the Czech Republic.
