European domestic production of organic sugar is struggling. In 2023, organic beet acreage sown in the EU could have decreased by 21%. After two years of increase, European domestic areas are said to have returned to a level close to that of 2020 with a total of 12845 hectares. Although this reduction in areas seems to be consistent with the difficulties encountered by the development of organic farming in the sugar beet sectors of several Member States, these estimates should be considered with caution: some Member States do not systematically mention whether the data relate to the harvested areas and whether any production of 'seed-bearing' beet is included. Despite these uncertainties, one thing is clear: the emergence and development of the domestic beet and organic sugar production sector is not at the level initially envisaged.
