The European Commission has approved the extension of duty-free trade with Ukraine until June 2025. The document includes restrictions on the import of poultry, eggs and sugar from Ukraine to the European Union. The reference period for setting import limits for sugar, eggs and poultry is to be the average of imports from 2022 and 2023. The number Eurostat for imports of sugar from Ukraine in 2022/23 (Oct/Sep) is 412,900 tonnes. On the other hand, if the Commission takes the average of the 2022 and 2023 calendar years, we get to 302,500 tonnes as the sugar “safeguard”.
